The text and the author:

Andrew Barton Paterson (1864-1941) was an Australian poet, journalist, and author who wrote extensively on Australian life. His notable works include Waltzing Matilda and The Man from Snowy River.

অ্যান্ড্রু বার্টন পেটারসন (১৮৬৪-১৯৪১) একজন অস্ট্রেলিয়ান কবি, সাংবাদিক এবং লেখক যিনি অস্ট্রেলিয়ান জীবন নিয়ে ব্যাপক লিখেছিলেন। তাঁর উল্লেখযোগ্য রচনাগুলির মধ্যে রয়েছে ওয়াল্টজিং মাতিলদা এবং দ্য ম্যান ফ্রম স্নোই রিভার।

The text describes in minute detail the daily activities of cats. The humorous narrative takes us into the world of cats and indicates to us that they may not be the gentle and timid creatures that we take them for. 

পাঠ্যে বিড়ালদের প্রতিদিনের ক্রিয়াকলাপের বিশদ বিবরণ দেওয়া হয়েছে। হাস্যকর গল্পটি আমাদের বিড়ালদের জগতে নিয়ে যায় এবং আমাদেরকে ইঙ্গিত দেয় যে তারা ভদ্র ও ভীতু প্রাণী নাও হতে পারে যে আমরা তাদের মনে করি।

Unit 1

Read the following:

Most people think that the cat is an unintelligent animal, fond of ease and caring little for anything but mice and milk.

বেশিরভাগ লোকেরা মনে করেন যে বিড়ালটি একটি নির্বোধ প্রাণী, স্বাচ্ছন্দ্য পছন্দ করে এবং ইঁদুর এবং দুধ ছাড়া অন্য কোনও কিছুর জন্য কম যত্নবান।

But a cat has really more character than most human beings and gets a great deal more satisfaction out of life.

তবে বেশিরভাগ মানুষের চেয়ে একটি বিড়ালের সত্যিই আরও অনেক বেশি চরিত্র রয়েছে এবং জীবন থেকে অনেক বেশি তৃপ্তি পায়।

He or she is an athlete, an acrobat and a grim fighter.

সে(পুরুষ বিড়াল) বা সে(স্ত্রী বিড়াল) একজন ক্রীড়াবিদ, একজন ব্যায়ামকুশলী এবং একজন মারাত্মক যোদ্ধা।

All day long the cat loafs about the house, takes things easy and allows himself to be pestered by the attentions of the people in the house.

সারা দিন ধরে বিড়ালটি বাড়িতে অলসভাবে ঘুরে বেড়ায়, জিনিসগুলি সহজভাবে নেয় এবং বাড়ির লোকদের মনোযোগ আকৃষ্ট করে নিজেকে বিরক্তির কারণ হিসাবে তুলে ধরে।

To pass the time away he sometimes watches a mouse-hole for an hour or two-just to keep himself from dying of boredom.

সময় অতিবাহিত করতে সে মাঝে মাঝে একঘেয়েমি থেকে মারা যাওয়ার হাত থেকে বাঁচতে কখনকখন এক ঘন্টা বা দু-ঘন্টা পরপর সে ইঁদুর এর গর্ত পর্যবেক্ষণ করত।

People get this idea that this sort of thing is all that holds life for a cat.

লোকেরা এই ধারণা পেত যে এই ধরণের জিনিসগুলি নিয়ে একটি বিড়াল সারা জীবন ধারণ করে।

But watch him as the shades of evening fall.

তবে সন্ধ্যা পড়ার ছায়া হিসাবে তাকে দেখুন।

You can see the cat as he really is.

আপনি বিড়ালটিকে যেমন দেখতে পেয়েছেন তেমনই দেখতে পাবেন।

Unit II

Read the following:

When the family sits down to tea, the cat puts in an appearance to get his share.

পরিবার যখন চায়ে বসে, বিড়াল তার ভাগ পেতে নিজেকে উপস্থিতি রাখে।

He purrs noisily and rubs himself against the legs of the family members. 

সে গরগর আওয়াজে শোরগোল করে এবং পরিবারের সদস্যদের পায়ের সঙ্গে নিজেকে ঘষে।

If there is a guest at the table the cat is particularly civil to him, because the guest is likely to have the best of what is offered.

যদি টেবিলে কোনও অতিথি থাকেন তবে  বিড়ালটি তার কাছে বিশেষভাবে শিষ্টাচারপূর্ণ, কারণ অতিথিটিকে যা দেওয়া হয় তার মধ্যেই সবচেয়ে ভাল কিছু থাকে।

Sometimes, instead of giving him something to eat, the guest stoops down and strokes the cat, and says, “Poor pussy! Poor pussy!” The cat soon tires of that. 

কখনও কখনও, তাকে কিছু খেতে দেওয়ার পরিবর্তে অতিথিটি নিম্নাভিমুখী হ্য় এবং বিড়ালটিকে আঘাত করে এবং বলে, ” বেচারা বিড়াল! বেচারা বিড়াল!” বিড়াল শীঘ্রই এর জন্য পরিশ্রান্ত হয়ে পরে।

He puts up his claw and quietly but firmly rakes the guest in the leg. 

সে তার নখগুলি একত্র করে এবং নিঃশব্দে তবে দৃঢ়ভাবে অতিথিকে পায়ে ঠেকায।

“Ow!” says the guest, “The cat stuck his claws into me!” 

“ও!” অতিথি বললেন “বিড়ালটি তার নখরটি আমার মধ্যে আটকে দিল! ”  

The delighted family remarks, “Isn’t it sweet of him? Isn’t he intelligent? He wants you to give him something to eat.”

আনন্দিত পরিবার মন্তব্য করে, “এটি কি তার খুব মিষ্টি নয়? সে কি বুদ্ধিমান নয়? সে চায় যে আপনি তাকে কিছু খেতে দিন।”

The guest dares not do what he would like to do-kick the cat out of the window.

অতিথি করেতে সাহস করলেন না যা করতে চাইছিলেন-লাথি মেরে বিড়ালটিকে জানলার বাইরে ফেলে দিতে।

So, with tears of rage and pain in his eyes, he affects to be very much amused and sorts out a bit of fish from his plate and hands it down.

সুতরাং, তার চোখে ক্রোধ এবং বেদনার অশ্রু নিয়ে সে খুব আনন্দিত হয়ে পড়ে এবং তার প্লেট থেকে কিছুটা মাছ বের করে এনে নিচে নামিয়ে বাছাই করতে থাকে। 

The  cat gingerly receives it, with a look in his eyes that says, “Another time, my friend, you won’t be so slow to understand.”

বিড়াল অতি সন্তর্পণে এটি গ্রহণ করে, তার চোখে এক নজর তাকিয়ে বলে যে “আরেকবার, আমার বন্ধু, আপনি বুঝতে এত মন্থর হবেন না।”

He purrs as he retires to a safe distance from the guest’s boot before eating his food. 

সে তার খাবার খাওয়ার আগে অতিথির বুট থেকে নিরাপদ দূরত্বে অবসর নেওয়ার সাথে সাথে সে গরগর আওয়াজ করে।

Unit III

Read the following:

When the family has finished tea, and gathers round the fire, the cat casually goes out of the room.

পরিবার যখন চা শেষ করে, এবং আগুনের চারপাশে জড়ো হ্য়, তখন  বিড়ালটি ঘটনাচক্রে ঘর থেকে বেরিয়ে যায়।

True life now begins for him.

সত্য জীবন এখন তাঁর জন্য শুরু হয়।

He saunters down his own backyard, springs to the top of the fence, drops lightly down to the other side.

সে তার নিজের বাড়ির উঠোনে অলসভাবে বা উদ্দেশ্যহীনভাবে ঘুরে বেড়ায়, বেড়ার শীর্ষে ঝর্ণা, হালকা করে অন্যদিক দিয়ে নীচে নেমে যায় ।

He trots across and skips to the roof of an empty shed.

সে আস্তে আস্তে দৌড়ায় এবং লাফিয়ে খালি শেডের ছাদে যায়।

His movement becomes lithe and pantherlike.

তার গতিবিধি  ক্ষিপ্র এবং চিতাবাঘ-এর মতো হয়ে যায়।

He looks keenly from side to side and moves noiselessly, for he has so many enemies-dogs and small boys with stones.

তিনি একপাশ থেকে অন্যদিকে তীক্ষ্ণভাবে তাকায় এবং নির্বাকভাবে চলাফেরা করে, কারণ তাঁর অনেক শত্রু রয়েছে-কুকুর এবং পাথর সহ ছোট ছেলেরা।

On top of the shed, the cat arches his back and rakes his claws once or twice through the soft bark of the old roof.

ছাদের উপরে, বিড়ালটি তার পিঠকে বাঁকা করে এবং নখগুলি  জড়ো করে একবার বা দু’বার পুরানো ছাদের নরম ছালে আঁচড় দেয়।

He stretches himself a few times to see if every muscle is in full working order.

সে প্রতিটি পেশী পূর্ণ কার্যক্রমে আছে কিনা তা দেখার জন্য  নিজেকে কয়েকবার প্রসারিত করেন।

Then, drooping his head nearly to his paws, he sends across a call to his kindred.

ঝুলিয়ে প্রায় থাবার কাছে নিয়ে আসে, সে তার আত্মীয়-স্বজনকে আহ্বান করে।

Before long they come, gliding, graceful shadows.

বেশি সময় অতিবাহিত হওয়ার আগেই তারা চলে আসে, গড়াতে গড়াতে, কমনীয় ছায়া।

No longer are they the meek creatures who an hour ago were mewing for fish and milk.

তারা আর সেই নম্র প্রাণী নয় যারা এক ঘন্টা আগে মাছ এবং দুধের জন্য মিউমিউ করছিল।

Just think how much more he gets out of his life then you do out of your’s! And the sports they have, too!

একবার চিন্তা করুন আপনি নিজের জীবন থেকে যতটা করতে পারেন তার চেয়ে সে তার জীবন থেকে আরও কত কিছু পায়।এবং তাদের খেলাধুলাও!

As they get older they go in for sports to the suburban backyards.

বয়স বাড়ার সাথে সাথে তারা শহরতলির পিছনের উঠোনগুলিতে খেলাধুলায় যায়।

These backyards that are dull to us, are to them hunting grounds where they have more gallant adventure than King Arthur’s knights ever had.

এই পিছনের উঠোনগুলি যা আমাদের কাছে নিস্তেজ, সেগুলি তাদের জন্য এমন শিকারের ক্ষেত্র যেখানে রাজা আর্থারের নাইটদের চেয়ে বেশি সাহসী অ্যাডভেঞ্চার রয়েছে।

It is always spoken as a reproach against cats that they are fonder of their home than of the people in it.

এটি সর্বদা বিড়ালদের বিরুদ্ধে তিরস্কার হিসাবে বলা হয় যে তারা সেখানকার মানুষেগুলির চেয়ে তাদের বাড়ির বেশি পছন্দ করে।

Naturally, the cat doesn’t like to leave his country, the land where all his friends are, and where he knows every landmark. 
স্বাভাবিকভাবেই, বিড়াল তার জায়গা ছেড়ে যেতে পছন্দ করে না, যেখানে তার সমস্ত বন্ধুবান্ধব রয়েছে এবং যেখানে সে প্রতিটি বৈশিষ্ট্য জানেন।

Exiled in a new land, he would have to learn a new geography.

একটি নতুন দেশে নির্বাসিত হলে, তাকে একটি নতুন ভূগোল শিখতে হবে।

So, when the family moves, the cat, if allowed, will stay at the old house and attach himself to the new tenants.

সুতরাং, যখন পরিবার সরে যায়, বিড়ালটিকে, যদি অনুমতি দেওয়া হয়, সে পুরানো বাড়িতেই থাকবে এবং নিজেকে নতুন ভাড়াটেদের সাথে সংযুক্ত করবে।

He will give them the privilege of boarding him while he enjoys life in his own way. 

সে নিজের উপায়ে জীবন উপভোগ করার সময় তাদেরকে তাকে আরোহণের সুযোগ দেবে।
