Philip Arthur Larkin (1922 – 1985) was a renowned English poet and novelist. His first book of poetry was The North Ship, followed by two novels, Jill and A Girl in Winter. He came to prominence in 1955 with the publication of his second collection of poems, The Less Deceived, followed by The Whitsun Weddings and High Windows. He was offered the position of Poet Laureate in 1984 but he declined it.

This poem describes the journey of three ships that head to different destinations. While two ships return, one presses forward and faces perils to continue its long onward journey, almost like a symbol of aspiration that overcomes all obstacles.

The North Ship Class 9 Bengali Meaning

I saw three ships go sailing by,

āφāĻŽি āĻĻেāĻ–āϞাāĻŽ āϤিāύāϟি āϜাāĻšাāϜ āϚāϞাāϚāϞ āĻ•āϰāĻ›ে,

Over the sea, the lifting sea,

āϏāĻŽুāĻĻ্āϰেāϰ āĻ“āĻĒাāϰ āĻĻিāϝ়ে, āωāϤ্āϤোāϞāĻ• āϏāĻŽুāĻĻ্āϰ

And the wind rose in the morning sky,

āĻāĻŦং āĻŦাāϤাāϏ āĻŦāχāϞ āϏāĻ•াāϜেāϰ āφāĻ•াāĻļে,

And one was rigged for a long journey.

āφāϰ āĻāĻ•āϜāύāĻ•ে āĻĻীāϰ্āϘ āϝাāϤ্āϰাāϰ āϜāύ্āϝ āĻ•াāϰ্āϝোāĻĒāϝ়োāĻ—ী āĻ•āϰা āĻšāϝ়েāĻ›িāϞ।

The first ship turned towards the west,

āĻĒ্āϰāĻĨāĻŽ āϜাāĻšাāϜāϟি āĻĒāĻļ্āϚিāĻŽ āĻĻিāĻ•ে āϘুāϰāϞ,

Over the sea, the running sea,

āϏāĻŽুāĻĻ্āϰেāϰ āωāĻĒāϰ āĻĻিāϝ়ে, āϚāϞāĻŽাāύ āϏāĻŽুāĻĻ্āϰ,

 And by the wind was all possessed

āĻāĻŦং āĻŦাāϤাāϏেāϰ āĻ…āϧিāĻ•াāϰে āϏāĻŽāϏ্āϤ āĻ›িāϞ

And carried to a rich country.

āĻāĻŦং āĻāĻ•āϟি āϏāĻŽৃāĻĻ্āϧ āĻĻেāĻļে āύিāϝ়ে āϝাāϝ়।

The second turned towards the east,

āĻĻ্āĻŦিāϤীāϝ়āϟি āĻĒূāϰ্āĻŦ āĻĻিāĻ•ে āϘুāϰāϞ,

Over the sea, the quaking sea,

āϏāĻŽুāĻĻ্āϰেāϰ āωāĻĒāϰ āĻĻিāϝ়ে, āĻ•āĻŽ্āĻĒāĻŽাāύ āϏāĻŽুāĻĻ্āϰ,

And the wind hunted it like a beast

āĻāĻŦং āĻŦাāϤাāϏ āĻāϟিāĻ•ে āĻ…āύুāϏāϰāĻŖ āĻ•āϰāĻ›িāϞ āĻāĻ•āϟি āĻĒāĻļুāϰ āĻŽāϤো

To anchor in captivity.

āĻŦāύ্āĻĻিāĻĻāĻļাāϝ় āύোāĻ™্āĻ—āϰ āĻ•āϰāϤে।

The third ship drove toward the north,

āϤৃāϤীāϝ় āϜাāĻšাāϜāϟি āωāϤ্āϤāϰ āĻĻিāĻ•ে āϚāϞে āĻ—েāϞ,

Over the sea, the darkening sea,

āϏāĻŽুāĻĻ্āϰেāϰ āωāĻĒāϰ āĻĻিāϝ়ে, āĻ•াāϞো āϏāĻŽুāĻĻ্āϰে,

But no breath of wind came forth,

āĻ•িāύ্āϤু āĻŦাāϤাāϏেāϰ āĻ•োāύāĻ“ āύিঃāĻļ্āĻŦাāϏ āĻŦেāϰ āĻšāϞ āύা

And the decks shone frostily.

āĻāĻŦং āĻĄেāĻ•āĻ—ুāϞি āĻšিāĻŽāĻļীāϤāϞāĻ­াāĻŦে āϜ্āĻŦāϞāϜ্āĻŦāϞ āĻ•āϰāĻ›িāϞ।

The northern sky rose high and black

āωāϤ্āϤāϰেāϰ āφāĻ•াāĻļ āωঁāϚুāϤে āĻāĻŦং āĻ•াāϞো āĻšāϝ়ে āωāĻ āϞ

Over the proud unfruitful sea,

āĻ—āϰ্āĻŦিāϤ āύিāώ্āĻĢāϞা āϏāĻŽুāĻĻ্āϰেāϰ āĻ“āĻĒāϰে, 

East and west the ships came back

āĻĒূāϰ্āĻŦ āĻāĻŦং āĻĒāĻļ্āϚিāĻŽ āϜাāĻšাāϜāĻ—ুāϞি āĻĢিāϰে āĻāϏেāĻ›িāϞ 

Happily or unhappily.

āϏুāĻ–ী āĻšāϝ়ে āĻŦা āĻ…āϏুāĻ–ী āĻšāϝ়ে। 

But the third went wide and far

āϤāĻŦে āϤৃāϤীāϝ়āϟি āĻĒ্āϰāĻļāϏ্āϤ āĻāĻŦং āĻĻূāϰে āĻ—িāϝ়েāĻ›িāϞ āĻĻিāĻ—āĻĻিāĻ—āύ্āϤে 

Into an unforgiving Sea

āύিāϰ্āĻŽāĻŽ āϏāĻŽুāĻĻ্āϰে 

Under a fire-spilling star,

āφāĻ—ুāύ āĻāϰাāύ āϤাāϰাāϰ āύীāϚে, 

And it was rigged for a long journey.

āĻāĻŦং āĻāϟি āĻāĻ•āϟি āĻĻীāϰ্āϘ āϝাāϤ্āϰাāϰ āϜāύ্āϝ āĻ•াāϰ্āϝোāĻĒāϝ়োāĻ—ী āĻ›িāϞ।
